Chaos Erupts In Parliament As Speaker Orders Removal Of Dr. Ayew Afriyie From Chamber Over Disrespect

Parliament Discussion On 2022 Budget To Commence November 23 2021

Parliament descended into disorder on Tuesday, June 10, after a fierce standoff erupted over an attempt by the Minority to comment on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Drama unfolded when Dr. Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, sought to make a statement on the strike during proceedings.

However, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor declined to admit the statement, prompting a defiant response from Dr. Afriyie, who insisted on addressing the issue.

Tensions quickly escalated when the Speaker ordered the Parliamentary Marshal to remove Dr. Afriyie from the chamber.

The directive sparked immediate outrage from Minority MPs, who rose in protest, chanting and disrupting proceedings.

The heated exchanges created a chaotic atmosphere, with members from both sides trading accusations amid rising tempers on the floor.

Unable to restore calm, the Speaker abruptly adjourned the sitting to Wednesday, leaving the issue unresolved and Parliament in a state of uncertainty over how the standoff will be addressed.
