A member of the communication team of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Anning, has cautioned party members against using illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as a political campaign tool ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the “Ebaanosen” programme on Plan B FM with host Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Anning stressed that politicising the galamsey crisis could damage the party’s credibility and weaken national efforts aimed at addressing the menace.
According to him, although illegal mining remains one of Ghana’s biggest environmental and economic challenges, the issue should not be reduced to mere campaign rhetoric.
“Even if Dr. Bawumia becomes president in 2028, he cannot completely end the galamsey menace,” he stated during the discussion.
Mr. Anning further warned that he would reconsider his role within the NPP if members of the party’s communication team attempt to exploit the issue for political gain during the election campaign.
“I will not be part of any communication strategy that uses galamsey as a campaign tool,” he emphasised.
His comments come amid renewed national debate over illegal mining and its devastating impact on water bodies, forests, farmlands, and local livelihoods across the country.
Political observers believe the issue will remain a major topic in Ghana’s political discourse as the country approaches the 2028 elections, with growing calls for non-partisan and sustainable solutions to the galamsey crisis.
