Baba Jamal stages comeback, clinches Ayawaso East NDC primary

Baba Jamal stages comeback, clinches Ayawaso East NDC primary
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The primary was held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election.

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed received 431 votes, Hajia Amina Adam secured 399 votes, Mohammed Ramme garnered 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azindow had 45 votes, and Mohammed Najib received 1 vote. These figures reflect the combined totals from the two voting centers.

The tightly contested primary attracted significant public interest, particularly amid discussions around campaign conduct. During the primary, Baba Jamal’s campaign distributed items such as 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates—gestures he maintained were acts of goodwill and not intended to influence the outcome.

Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election.

Meanwhile, Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, had projected that Baba Jamal’s support in the Ayawaso East NDC parliamentary primary was unlikely to exceed 38%, citing recent polling data and prevailing voter trends in the constituency.

According to the projection, Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, was firmly in the lead with an estimated 54% support ahead of the polls scheduled for Saturday, February 7.

Mr Dankwah noted that even under the most favourable conditions for Baba Jamal, the data showed a significant gap between the two leading contenders, making a dramatic late shift in voter preference improbable.
