Baba Jamal, the victorious candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election, is set to be sworn in as the Member of Parliament for the constituency on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The ceremony will be led by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
Baba Jamal’s win in the highly anticipated by-election on March 3, 2026, came as a triumph for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The by-election was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following the tragic passing of former MP Mahama Naser Toure in January 2026.
Jamal’s strong showing at the polls saw him securing 10,884 votes, a resounding victory over his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,009 votes. Other contenders included independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda, who garnered 1,885 votes, Ibrahim Idrissu with 43 votes, and Kanor David who obtained 104 votes. In total, 16,928 valid votes were cast, with 120 ballots rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 17,048.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on March 9, 2026, Baba Jamal expressed his gratitude and readiness to serve the people of Ayawaso East. “Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he wrote.
