The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashaiman Constituency, Chairman Joe, has criticized what he describes as rising levels of hypocrisy in the national conversation on corruption.
Speaking on Plan B 104.5 FM’s Ebaanosen show, he reacted to recent comments made by the Chief of Akyem Muoso, who accused some government officials of acting morally upright during their term served but doing the opposite when out of power.
Chairman Joe welcomed the chief’s remarks but argued that the same energy should have been directed at Ghana’s previous administration, which he claims presided over worse acts of corruption. He alleged that an individual from the former government owned more than 30 houses—wealth he believes could have been used to build hospitals, support nursing mothers, and improve basic services for citizens.
According to him, despite 11 months in office, the current government has not been linked to any major corruption scandal. He added that the new national budget demonstrates fiscal responsibility and does not rely on what he called “the usual excuses” of high taxes or currency instability, which he said the former government often used to justify its performance.
Chairman Joe also questioned the role of the clergy during the previous administration’s fight against illegal mining (galamsey). He wondered why the same religious voices, who once called for a state of emergency over galamsey, have gone silent.
He further stressed that the president is committed to making decisions in the interest of Ghana and not based on rumors or public pressure. Chairman Joe ended by calling on the president to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, arguing that such a move would help strengthen public confidence in the country’s democratic processes.
