Asantehemaa Nana Afia Konadu III has expressed worry over the bulk meter issue at the New Kejetia Market that has caused a stir between market board and the traders.
This development was revealed by one of the 68 queen mothers at the Kejetia Market, Adwenehemaa Nana Grace Agyei Darko.
Speaking on Akoma FM’ Tuesday, January 24, Adwenehemaa, to wit queenmother of Mad fish sellers, at Kejetia and central market revealed that the slow pace at which the board of the market and management are treating the meter issues at Kejetia has been a headache to the Asantehemaa.
She, hence, called for the need to expedite processes to mitigate the growing tension at the market.
She added that “there are sixty eight queen mothers [market leaders] who have been appointed by the Asantehemaa so we work in the capacity and powers of the Golden stool; the Queen is really worried about the several issues at the market topical among them is the single meter the over seven thousand shops are hooked onto so the KMA mayor and the market management must sit up and resolve this issue once and for all”.
There are over 7,000 lockable shops inside the Kejetia market and all these shops are connected to one meter, so at the end of the month the light bills are shared among the traders, a situation the traders have since vehemently spoken against.
They demand each shop should have its meter.
The single meter is the main cause of the recent power cut at the market because the trader’s plea for separate meters seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
They also decided to resist payment of service charges and light bills hence the piled-up light bill to the tune really of over GH¢4.6 million.
