The Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare has instructed his crime officer at the Bogoso Divisional Police Station to cause the arrest of any politician or person of authority who threatens his life or work. The crime officer made it known to Dr Dampare that his work is being hampered by the interference of some politicians and people of influence within the area.
He mentioned that they have even threatened to cause him to be transferred from the station to another area. Dr Dampare upon hearing the complaint got infuriated and ordered the officer to take the due process in arresting these unnamed persons.
During his interaction with officers of the unit, the IGP said the police officers must not succumb to any external influence, especially when it threatens the operations or life of the officer. Dr Dampare urged the officer to avail his number to those who are threatening him with the transfer so he confronts them.
He added that those persons would rather live to regret threatening his men at the Bogoso Divisional Police. He ironically said those persons would have to threaten him [Dampare] with a transfer too if they ever call to make such threats against the crime officer.
“…if somebody comes to intimidate you, give my number to the person. If they get the courage to call, by the time we finish the call prepare yourself for that person.”
The IGP continued that there is nothing to fear of these threats if one is clean and thus performs his work diligently. He noted that such conditions should be the mantra of any police officer forthwith.
“If he intimidates you arrest him. Now that you’ve informed me, that must be done. Only two things will save you; be professional and do what is right, and also have your evidence intact and go to sleep,” he told the officers.
Dr Dampare justified that Police Officers make great sacrifices to protect the lives of the people, even at the peril of their health. He explained that the late-night patrols and investigations, and even honouring his call at such a night “is not a joke for someone to come threatening them because of their work.”
