The victim, a commercial driver transporting passengers from Bibiani to Sunyani, was fatally shot after refusing to comply with the robbers’ orders—raising fresh concerns over rising insecurity on the neglected highway.

A heartbreaking incident on the Sunyani-Atronie road has left many in shock after a commercial driver lost his life during an armed robbery on the evening of Friday, June 13, 2025.

The attack, which happened around 5:30 p.m. near Agyemamh Mkwantaw, has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on that stretch of road.

An eyewitness, who is also a driver, recounted the terrifying experience during an interview on Ghana Se Sen, a current affairs program on Lawson TV/Radio.

He said that the robbers, about eight men, all heavily armed, stopped two vehicles and began robbing passengers.

According to the witness, the robbers ordered one of the drivers to lie down, but he refused.

Speaking in Twi, the robbers reportedly became agitated and made a chilling decision.

“They said the driver was being stubborn and then they shot him in the head,” the witness said quietly. The deceased is said to be transporting passengers from Bibiani to Sunyani.

“The scene quickly turned chaotic. Some passengers, including women, screamed and the robbers ran into a nearby cocoa farm.”

The driver described the moment as deeply distressing, calling the road stretch “dangerous” due to multiple robbery incidents that have occurred there this year.

Joining the discussion on the Ghana Se Sen, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Vincent Kofi Owusu, expressed his sadness over the incident and acknowledged the challenges facing the area.

“That particular enclave has some issues,” he said, “and what happened on Friday is very unfortunate.”

Hon. Owusu mentioned that both he and local security agencies are working to improve safety along the road, though not all strategies can be disclosed publicly.

He highlighted the condition of the road as a key concern.

“Between Atronie and Antwikrom, the road is in a very poor state, with many potholes,” he explained.

However, he offered some reassurance, stating that the Sunyani-Atronie road has been included in the government’s Big Push infrastructure program.

“When completed, this project will bring a lot of relief to commuters and residents,” he noted.

As the community mourns the loss of a hardworking driver, there is a growing hope that urgent steps will be taken to restore both safety and confidence on this vital road link.
