Police have arrested a suspected gang leader and one other person in connection with the robbery attack that led to the death of Berekum Chelsea footballer Dominic Frimpong.

Frimpong died from gunshot wounds after armed robbers attacked the club’s team bus on the night of April 12, 2026. The incident occurred along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District while the team was returning to Berekum from a league fixture in Samreboi.

According to police sources, the two suspects were arrested following an exchange of gunfire with officers. The alleged gang leader sustained injuries during the operation and was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. Sources say the suspect has since admitted involvement in the robbery.

The attack, which claimed the life of the 20-year-old player, sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns about the safety of teams travelling for domestic league matches. In the aftermath, the Ghana Police Service launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, while football authorities and clubs called for tighter security measures for team movements. Investigations are ongoing as police work to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected robbery gang.
