Some commercial drivers in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, have refused to adhere to newly approved fares, the Office of the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has observed.

This was noted in a Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) statement dated May 26, 2025.

“As of May 24, 2025, the national leadership of transport unions announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, which all commercial transport operators are expected to implement,” the KMA underlined.

The assembly admonished, “It’s important to note that any commercial driver who refuses to charge the approved reduced fare commits a criminal offense punishable by the law.”

“To ensure full compliance with this directive, the Mayor in a meeting with Head of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi have agreed to deploy officers to major roads in the Metropolis to monitor and enforce adherence to the new fares,” the KMA cautioned.

“We kindly request the public’s cooperation in this endeavor as we strive to restore order and sanity on our roads,” the statement ended.

“We appreciate your understanding and support in this initiative.”
