CHRAJ investigator cautions against loose talk, warns of legal consequences

Negative obstinacy can lead to imprisonment — Isabella

A Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Investigator, Isabella, has cautioned the public against careless disclosure of private information, warning that such behaviour can damage reputations, erode trust and expose individuals to legal consequences.

Speaking on the topic Managing a Loose Talker in Relationships, Marriage and the Workplace on Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme, Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Isabella described a loose talker as someone who speaks without restraint, lacks discretion and shares information without verifying its accuracy.

She explained that having a loose-talking partner can be frustrating, particularly when information shared in confidence is quickly disclosed to others. She stressed that the behaviour is not limited to any particular gender and urged couples to distinguish between confiding in someone and carelessly sharing private matters.

According to her, partners must understand that not everything discussed within a relationship should be repeated to outsiders, emphasising that protecting confidential information is essential to building and maintaining trust.

Addressing the issue in the workplace, Isabella observed that some employees disclose sensitive information or compromise their organisations for personal gain, potentially damaging their employers’ reputations.

She noted that loose talk does not necessarily involve lengthy conversations, as a single careless statement could tarnish someone’s reputation and even jeopardise their employment.

On the legal implications, the CHRAJ Investigator explained that defamation occurs when false statements about an individual are published in a manner that damages their reputation.

She also cautioned that disclosing another person’s private health information without their consent could infringe on their fundamental human rights. She added that careless communication, including statements made on digital platforms, could attract legal consequences depending on the circumstances.

Isabella urged the public to exercise restraint, think carefully about the consequences of their words and seek permission before discussing another person’s private affairs.

She further advised individuals to be discerning about whom they confide in, noting that sensitive information should be shared cautiously, even with partners, friends and religious leaders.
