The Ghana Navy has intercepted two boats carrying approximately 4.8 tonnes of suspected marijuana in an intelligence-led operation on the Volta Lake.
The consignment, allegedly destined for Nigeria, is estimated to have a street value of more than US$1 million.
The seized narcotics comprised 117 sacks, each containing approximately 80 packs of suspected marijuana.
Naval Captain Festus Osei-Brobbey, Director of Naval Operations at the Naval Headquarters, disclosed the operation during a press briefing at Ada.
He said the interception was carried out by the Riverine Command of the Ghana Navy at about 1:00 a.m. following intelligence gathered by the security service.
The operation forms part of efforts by the Ghana Navy to clamp down on the trafficking of illicit drugs through the country’s inland waterways.
