A 29-year-old tricycle rider, Naah Mashood, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a three-year-old girl at Tiegber in the Wa Municipality.
According to a press release issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on November 2, 2026, the convict was arrested on February 24, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.
Police said the suspect had been contracted by the child’s parent to transport her to and from school. However, on February 23, 2026, he allegedly lured the girl to an isolated location and sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle, popularly known as a Cambuu.
The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVSU) of the Upper West Regional Police Command subsequently arrested him and commenced investigations.
Following investigations, the suspect was arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court before the case proceeded to the Wa High Court for trial.
After a full trial, the court found him guilty of defilement, and on October 30, 2026, Justice Osei-Wusu sentenced him to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution, as well as individuals who contributed to ensuring justice was served.
The Command has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and take necessary steps to safeguard them against abuse.
It also encouraged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVSU office for prompt action.
