Elorm Kupomey explains how infidelity can damage marriages without necessarily ending them

Elorm Kupomey explains how infidelity can damage marriages without necessarily ending them

Marital infidelity can undermine trust, disrupt family stability and contribute to divorce, but it does not necessarily mean couples must end their marriages, Mrs. Elorm Kupomey, a CHRAJ Investigator, has explained.

Speaking on the legal aspects of managing the effects of marital infidelity on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mrs. Kupomey explained that marriage involves an agreement between partners to remain committed to each other.

She noted that under ordinance marriage, couples exchange vows and make promises that establish their commitment to the union. She added that customary marriage differs in nature, as it does not necessarily carry the same expectation of exclusive marriage under customary arrangements.

Mrs. Kupomey explained that infidelity occurs when one partner fails to honour the commitment made to the other and becomes involved with another person. She identified lack of commitment, financial difficulties and medical conditions as some factors that may contribute to marital infidelity.

On its effects, she said infidelity destroys trust within the home, adding that children may also suffer because they often regard their parents as role models.

She noted that the situation can result in loss of confidence, emotional distance, financial disagreements, competition, resentment and hostility, potentially leaving the marriage unstable.

Mrs. Kupomey further observed that changing societal attitudes towards marriage and its values have raised concerns about respect for the institution, with some young people increasingly becoming apprehensive about marriage.

She explained that infidelity can contribute to divorce or separation, particularly when a partner fails to fulfil marital responsibilities, including conjugal duties.

However, she stressed that infidelity does not automatically mean couples must divorce, explaining that the court considers the circumstances of each marriage when dealing with divorce proceedings.

Mrs. Kupomey urged individuals to understand their partners and ensure they are adequately prepared for marriage before committing, emphasising that the consequences of marital infidelity extend beyond couples and can affect families and society as a whole.
