The Rent Commission has threatened legal action against the University of Ghana over its proposed 26% increase in hostel fees, warning the university to suspend the planned adjustment or face possible court action.
Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku in an interview with Joy News said the Commission is seeking legal advice from the Attorney-General on possible steps to secure an injunction to prevent the proposed increment.
He insists that no institution is above the law and that the university must comply with the country’s legal framework in determining accommodation charges.
The warning comes amid growing opposition to the proposed increase, with students of the University of Ghana expected to stage a protest on Friday to demand an immediate reversal of the decision.
The students have criticised the planned adjustment, describing it as the commercialisation of student accommodation on campus.
The proposed 26% increase has sparked concerns over the affordability of accommodation, particularly for students already grappling with the cost of living and other academic expenses.
The Rent Commission’s latest position signals a possible legal dispute if the university proceeds with the planned increment before the concerns raised are resolved.
