Thomas Ayertey urges strict enforcement of laws against ambulance misuse in drug trafficking

Thomas Ayertey urges strict enforcement of laws against ambulance misuse in drug trafficking

Thomas Ayertey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Interior Minister to ensure the strict enforcement of laws governing the use of ambulance sirens and horns amid concerns over the alleged use of ambulances to transport cocaine and other illicit drugs.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey questioned the effectiveness of existing regulations, arguing that some road users, including celebrities, appear to misuse sirens and horns, particularly during traffic congestion.

He stressed the need for authorities to ensure that existing laws are enforced, urging the Interior Minister to take decisive steps to address the alleged misuse of ambulances for illicit activities.

Mr. Ayertey also expressed concern about what he described as inappropriate practices among some ambulance operators, insisting that the law must be applied fairly to all offenders, regardless of their status or political affiliation.

He called for impartial investigations and prosecutions, emphasising that individuals found culpable in drug trafficking must be held accountable without political interference.

According to him, illicit drugs continue to destroy the lives of young people and pose a serious threat to society. He added that the substantial financial gains associated with the drug trade make efforts to combat the menace particularly challenging.

Mr. Ayertey maintained that strict enforcement of existing laws and equal accountability would be essential in tackling drug trafficking and preventing the misuse of emergency vehicles.
