Fidel Nii Akuffo Bortey, Tema Metro Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called for increased public education and stronger enforcement of existing laws to combat online child sexual exploitation and abuse in Ghana.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Mr. Bortey highlighted the dangers of online sexual exploitation, warning that both boys and girls are vulnerable to abuse in the digital space.
He expressed concern about the circulation of sexually explicit images of children online and stressed the need for the public to understand the legal protections available to persons under 18 years.
Mr. Bortey explained that online child sexual exploitation and abuse can have devastating consequences for victims, including mental health challenges, suicidal thoughts, stigmatisation and social isolation.
According to him, victims whose private images or experiences become widely circulated may fear public judgment, potentially affecting their education, relationships and overall well-being.
He therefore called for intensified public education to help individuals recognise the risks of online sexual exploitation, identify abusive situations and understand where to seek assistance.
The NCCE Tema Metro Director also emphasised the need for collaboration among relevant institutions, including the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), to strengthen efforts to prevent abuse and protect vulnerable children.
He further urged parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children, monitor their internet use and educate them on the dangers associated with online interactions.
On legal consequences, Mr. Bortey noted that perpetrators could face fines or imprisonment, depending on the nature of the offence and the applicable law.
He stressed that effective enforcement of existing legislation was essential to holding offenders accountable and ensuring that children are protected from sexual exploitation and abuse online.
