The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has clarified its role in tourism promotion activities linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that it has no authority to issue visas, guarantee approvals or determine the outcomes of individual applications.
In a press release dated Friday, October 9, 2026, the Authority addressed public commentary and allegations concerning visa application arrangements associated with Ghana’s tourism promotion initiative ahead of the global football tournament.
The GTA explained that it identified the World Cup as an opportunity to showcase Ghana’s tourism, culture, music, fashion, crafts and creative industries to international audiences.
According to the Authority, the initiative was presented to and approved by its Board and involved various groups, including cultural troupes, musicians, exhibitors, media practitioners, tourism industry representatives, GTA staff and heads of related agencies.
GTA Engaged US Embassy, Canadian High Commission
The Authority said it engaged the United States Embassy and the Canadian High Commission to seek guidance on the applicable visa requirements and procedures for the selected participants.
It clarified, however, that its involvement was limited to identifying participating groups, facilitating institutional introductions and providing guidance on the visa application process.
The GTA stressed that visa decisions rested exclusively with the relevant diplomatic missions and immigration authorities, adding that it had no power to guarantee successful applications.
Participants to Bear Visa and Travel Costs
On the financial arrangements, the Authority disclosed that it initially explored private-sector sponsorship to support the participating groups.
However, it said the substantial financial requirements made the proposed sponsorship arrangement impracticable.
Consequently, participants were informed that they would be responsible for their own visa application fees, travel and accommodation expenses.
The GTA reiterated that its involvement was part of its statutory mandate to promote Ghana as a tourism destination and showcase the country’s cultural and creative industries to the international community during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
