Ghana’s Black Stars have dropped five places to 70th in the latest FIFA World Men’s Ranking following a difficult start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars, who were ranked 65th in the previous ranking, lost 25.73 points and are now 14th among African nations.
The latest rankings, released on Wednesday, October 7, were based on 338 men’s international matches played since the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on July 19.
Ghana’s decline follows defeats in their opening two AFCON qualifying matches. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia, leaving them without a point from their first two games.
The poor start also preceded the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who left his position by mutual consent after winning just one of his seven matches in charge.
The latest setback adds to a difficult period for the four-time African champions, who also failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
The Black Stars will have an opportunity to revive their qualifying campaign in November when they face Somalia in back-to-back matches. Somalia are currently ranked 200th in the world.
Meanwhile, Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked side at seventh in the world, followed by Senegal in 18th. Côte d’Ivoire are ranked 29th, while Nigeria have slipped four places to 30th.
