Public health nurse urges expectant mothers to prepare early for successful breastfeeding

Public Health Nurse Betty Ackon has urged women to pay close attention to the risk factors and warning signs of breast cancer to promote early detection and timely treatment.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Betty Ackon explained that breast cancer can be influenced by several factors, including age, lifestyle and reproductive history.

She noted that although breast cancer is more commonly diagnosed in certain age groups, younger people can also develop the disease due to various risk factors.

According to her, lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity, alcohol consumption and smoking can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

She also identified obesity, reproductive history, gender and not breastfeeding after childbirth among factors associated with the disease.

Betty Ackon further stressed the need for women to recognise possible warning signs and seek medical attention when they notice unusual changes in their breasts.

She mentioned redness or rashes on the breast, unusual discharge from the breast when a woman is not breastfeeding, boils, unexplained breast pain, and an enlargement or change in the size of one breast as signs that should not be ignored.

She encouraged women who notice any unusual changes in their breasts to seek medical attention for proper assessment.

She emphasised that recognising changes in the breast early can help women seek appropriate medical care promptly and improve the chances of successful treatment.
