An investigator with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Isabella, has highlighted the emotional and financial challenges that often accompany grief, particularly following the loss of a loved one.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme, Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Isabella explained that bereavement can place significant emotional and financial pressure on individuals and families.
She noted that the situation can become particularly difficult when the deceased was the main provider for the family, leaving relatives to deal with the pain of losing a loved one while also finding ways to meet their financial needs.
According to Isabella, the pressure associated with funeral expenses, debts and everyday responsibilities can intensify the emotional distress experienced by bereaved families.
She further stressed the importance of having appropriate emotional support and healthy coping mechanisms when dealing with grief.
Isabella observed that when people are left to deal with severe emotional and financial difficulties without adequate support, some may become desperate and resort to unlawful activities in an attempt to survive.
She therefore called for greater attention to the emotional and practical needs of people experiencing grief, urging families, friends and communities to support bereaved individuals during difficult periods.
She also noted that healing from grief takes time, explaining that while time may not erase the memories or pain associated with a loss, it can help individuals gradually come to terms with what has happened and begin rebuilding their lives.
Isabella encouraged people experiencing grief to seek support and avoid suffering in silence, stressing the importance of compassion and community support in helping individuals navigate the difficult journey of loss and recovery.
