Crime has no political colour – Christian Council demands probe into drug financiers

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has thrown its moral weight behind calls for a full financial investigation into a string of high-profile narcotics interceptions, urging state institutions to prove that “no individual, regardless of political or economic stature, is beyond the reach of the law.”

The Council’s Chairman, Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, made the call on Thursday, September 24, 2026, when he received a delegation from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Policy Committee on Defence, Intelligence & Security and its Committee on Religious Affairs at the CCG’s General Secretariat in Accra.

The delegation had presented an Aide-Mémoire seeking what the Council described as a “non-partisan moral, pastoral, and spiritual intervention” over the growing incidence of narcotics trafficking linked to Ghana.

Rev. Thompson said the Council had listened to concerns about recent interceptions, including 3.3 tonnes of cocaine seized at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast; an interception on the Takoradi–Cape Coast highway; 866 parcels found in gari sacks at Tema Harbour; and “unresolved questions surrounding aviation and maritime incidents.”

“We share your profound concern,” he said. “These developments pose an existential threat to our national security, our youth, our families, and our spiritual well-being.”

The Council urged the Presidency, Parliament, the Narcotics Control Commission, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) and the judiciary to use their powers under the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019) and the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044) to “track the financial footprints of these drug shipments.”

Despite hosting the NPP delegation, the CCG insisted its position was not political. “Crime has no political color,” the Chairman said. “Drug addiction does not choose victims based on party cards.”

He added that the Council’s response “is not an endorsement of any political party’s campaign platform or a critique of another’s administration. It is a moral stand.”

The CCG said it had taken the Aide-Mémoire under advisement and would forward its reflections through its Standing Committee and Executive Council to ensure sustained institutional monitoring.
