A young pawpaw seller has been killed after a forklift reportedly lost control and crashed into roadside traders at the Brewery Traffic Light in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026.
The deceased, identified as Jennifer, was reportedly selling pawpaw with other traders near the busy intersection when the forklift, travelling from Asokwa towards Atonsu, allegedly developed a brake failure.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the heavy-duty machine as he approached the traffic light and veered towards the traders.
Ama Sefa, a fellow trader and friend of the deceased, said they had moved away from the road when the traffic light changed, but the forklift suddenly came towards them.
She said the driver was shouting that his brakes had failed as he struggled to control the machine.
Ama Sefa managed to escape, but Jennifer was reportedly struck and dragged by the forklift, killing her on the spot.
The incident created panic among traders and motorists, who rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion.
Personnel from the Asokwa Divisional Police Command later arrived at the scene to control the crowd, manage traffic and begin investigations.
The forklift has since been impounded by the police.
Police sources say the driver allegedly fled the scene after the accident and is currently being pursued.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
