The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says his ministry has engaged the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme that will provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
According to the Minister, the initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in local governance while creating opportunities for citizens to take a more active role in decision-making at the local level.
He said the programme is being pursued in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which provides the legal framework for Ghana’s decentralised local governance system.
Mr. Ayariga also believes the initiative will help generate greater public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate in the decentralisation process.
He said broadcasting Assembly and Town Hall meetings live would allow citizens to follow discussions and decisions taken by their local authorities, even when they are unable to attend such meetings in person.
The Minister stressed the importance of building local institutions that are transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.
“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions,” he said.
