Six arrested over violent attack at New Winneba

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six persons in connection with a violent attack and rioting at New Winneba in the Central Region.

The suspects have been identified as 52-year-old Kweku Kakraba, 19-year-olds Arko Thomas and Samuel Tulasi, 22-year-olds Samuel Gyasi, Emmanuel Okyere and Seth Osei.

According to the Police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., when a mob of about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba Township.

The mob, reportedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, attacked residents, stores and properties belonging to natives, resulting in injuries and extensive damage to property.

The Police said about 15 injured persons, including a police officer, were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.

Three persons were also confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.

As part of investigations, the Police retrieved a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the crime scene.

Reinforcement teams from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, together with the IGP’s special team, have since been deployed to the area.

Two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters have also been deployed to support security operations.

The Police Command says six snap checkpoints have been mounted, while day and night patrols have been intensified to prevent further attacks.

Personnel from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Department (PID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also been deployed to monitor the situation.
