National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Thomas Ayertey has called for a justice system in which political affiliation, public office or influence does not determine who is held accountable for wrongdoing.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey argued that Ghana’s laws must apply equally to all citizens, including Members of Parliament, government officials and politically connected individuals.
He said holding public office should not place anyone beyond the reach of the law, insisting that whenever there is evidence of wrongdoing, the appropriate investigative and legal processes must be allowed to run their course.
According to Mr. Ayertey, accountability must not depend on whether a suspect belongs to the governing party or the opposition. He maintained that political loyalty should never be used as a shield against investigation, prosecution or punishment where the evidence supports such action.
He further called on Ghanaians to speak up and report suspected corruption and other wrongdoing instead of protecting individuals because of their political connections.
Mr. Ayertey cautioned that shielding politically connected persons from accountability only emboldens others to believe they can also escape the consequences of their actions.
He said Ghana’s democratic institutions must be strong and independent enough to hold even those in positions of power accountable, stressing that the equal application of the law is critical to fighting corruption, protecting public resources and restoring confidence in state institutions.
“Nobody should be untouchable because of political power or public office,” Mr. Ayertey stressed, as he called for a system where the law works equally for every Ghanaian.
