The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with a suspected fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
The arrest follows a complaint by 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who told the Police that four men posing as legitimate gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
The gold was later tested and found to be fake. It has since been retained by the Police as an exhibit.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, intelligence-led investigations led to Gyamfi Christian’s arrest on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and disclosed that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
Police say Gyamfi also identified three alleged accomplices: Abraham, alias “Frenchman,” who is alleged to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar. The three suspects are currently at large, with efforts underway to arrest them. (CitiNewsroom.com)
Preliminary investigations have further established that the group allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in a separate fake gold transaction at Drobo earlier this year.
Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations as officers work to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The Bono Regional Police Command has urged the public, particularly those involved in gold transactions, to exercise caution and conduct proper verification before committing large sums of money.
