The Circuit Court ‘2’ in Accra has sentenced a 28-year-old driver, Thomas Agambaa, alias Rasta, to 15 years’ imprisonment for conspiring with accomplices to rob his former employer at gunpoint.
Agambaa was convicted and sentenced yesterday on two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
The prosecution, led by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, told the court that Agambaa and his accomplices attacked Madam Grace Belkis Azure at her residence at Zaare in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region on June 12, 2022 and made away with an unspecified amount of money.
Agambaa pleaded guilty with explanation.
However, after considering his explanation, the court held that it did not constitute a defence but amounted to mitigation. The court consequently convicted him on the charges.
According to the prosecution, Agambaa acted together with Banabas Akologo Abilba, alias Akoli, now deceased, Basit, Justice, Thomas alias Tommy Lee, Wizzy, also deceased and Mohammed alias Shatta, who is currently at large.
The court heard that on June 12, 2022, at about 7:00 p.m., Madam Azure, a businesswoman who resides at Zaare and operates a shop and food joint at the Bolgatanga Lorry Station, returned home from work with a witness, Desmond.
The prosecution said shortly after they entered the house, four armed men arrived on two motorbikes, wielding pump-action guns and pistols.
The attackers allegedly subjected Madam Azure and Desmond to beatings before robbing them of an unspecified amount of money.
A complaint was subsequently lodged at the Bolgatanga District Police Station.
The prosecution said the Ghana Police Service, through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), had earlier commenced surveillance and intelligence-led operations in response to an increase in armed robbery and the proliferation of illicit firearms within the Bolgatanga Metropolis and adjoining communities.
During the investigations, the CID Headquarters Operations Unit reportedly received intelligence linking Agambaa to an organised armed robbery syndicate allegedly responsible for several robbery attacks.
On August 4, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m., operatives of the CID Headquarters Operations Unit arrested Agambaa at his hideout at Ganbibko in the Bolgatanga Metropolis.
A search conducted during his arrest led to the recovery of an unregistered Haojue motorbike.
The prosecution said Agambaa, when cautioned, admitted his involvement in the offence and mentioned his alleged accomplices as Banabas Akologo Abilba alias Akoli, Basit, Justice, Thomas alias Tommy Lee, Wizzy and Mohammed, alias Shatta.
Further investigations established that Agambaa previously worked with Patasgo Company Limited as an ambulance driver and also served as an errand boy for Madam Azure.
His position, according to the prosecution, enabled him to become familiar with the complainant’s business operations, financial dealings, movements and daily routines.
The prosecution further said Agambaa developed close relationships with some of the complainant’s workers, including Justice, who is yet to be arrested.
Investigators also established that dissatisfaction arose after Agambaa and Justice allegedly believed that Madam Azure had failed to fulfil promises made to them, including assisting with the construction of rooms and helping Agambaa obtain a driver’s licence.
The prosecution said the perceived grievances subsequently became the motive for Agambaa and his accomplices to allegedly conspire to rob Madam Azure on several occasions.
The police are continuing efforts to arrest the remaining suspects, recover the firearms believed to have been used in the robberies and dismantle the alleged criminal group.
