President John Mahama has revised his earlier plan to construct six mini stadia in Ghana’s six newly created regions, with the government now set to build 10 new stadia across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, during the 32nd Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
According to Mr. Adams, President Mahama initially promised to construct one mini stadium in each of the six new regions but has since reviewed the plan to expand the project to 10 stadia.
“John Mahama made a promise to build six mini stadia for the six new regions, but I dare tell you that the president has reviewed that decision and he is no longer going to build the six mini stadia. He is going to build 10 stadia,” Mr. Adams said.
Under the revised plan, Western North, Oti, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East regions will each receive a new stadium.
Additional facilities are also planned for the Upper East, Upper West and Volta regions, with one more stadium included in the government’s expanded infrastructure programme.
Mr. Adams disclosed that steps have already been taken to commence the project, saying the Finance Minister has issued the necessary commencement authorisation.
“The Finance Minister has issued commencement authorisation, and we are going through the processes to get these contracts awarded, and they will move to sites immediately,” he added.
The government says the project forms part of its broader efforts to improve sports infrastructure and expand access to quality sporting facilities across the country.
The construction of the 10 new stadia is expected to provide additional venues for domestic football, while also creating opportunities for the development of other sporting disciplines in regions with limited sports infrastructure.
