Ghana has renewed its commitment to building an inclusive digital economy that creates opportunities for all citizens, including persons with disabilities, women entrepreneurs, rural businesses and young traders.
The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, said Ghana’s digital transformation agenda must be designed to ensure that no group is excluded from the benefits of digital trade.
Her remarks were contained in a speech read on her behalf at a capacity-building workshop on Inclusive E-Commerce and Digital Trade held in Accra on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The Minister described the workshop as an important step towards ensuring that Ghana’s digital economy works for all citizens and not only those with access to reliable internet connectivity, digital devices, urban infrastructure and digital skills.
She noted that the government, in collaboration with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, UNDP and UNCDF under the Joint SDG Fund, had worked over the past two years to develop Ghana’s National E-Commerce Strategy.
According to her, e-commerce is rapidly becoming a key platform for modern trade, with micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, entrepreneurs and traders increasingly relying on digital platforms to reach customers and expand their businesses.
Speaking at the opening session, Martine Julsaint Kidane of UN Trade and Development also highlighted the growing role of e-commerce in expanding economic participation across Africa.
She said digital technologies are creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation, trade and job creation by enabling businesses to access larger markets and participate more actively in regional and global value chains.
The workshop forms part of Ghana’s efforts to implement its National E-Commerce Strategy, which provides a roadmap for creating a stronger and more inclusive environment for digital trade.
The strategy is expected to help ensure that e-commerce contributes meaningfully to sustainable economic development while expanding opportunities for businesses and individuals across the country.
