Plan B FM has officially unveiled a new identity for its flagship community football competition, rebranding the Plan B FM Inter-Community Soccer Gala as the Plan B FM GrassRoot Cup 2026 ahead of its fifth edition.
The rebranding was announced at the tournament’s official media launch held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Hotel Joecarl, Community 6, Tema, where organizers reaffirmed their commitment to discovering and nurturing football talents from the grassroots.
Chairman of FreeMinds Communication Company Limited, Dr. Martin Asare-Aniagyei, said the new name symbolizes opportunity and reflects the organization’s renewed commitment to developing the next generation of footballers.
“The GrassRoot Cup represents our belief that today’s grassroots players can become tomorrow’s global champions,” he noted.
Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the organizers, Chief Executive Officer of FreeMinds Communication Company Limited, Madam Comfort Aniagyei, described the tournament as more than just a football competition.
She explained that the competition brings together communities from Greater Accra, the Eastern Region, and parts of the Central and Volta regions, creating a platform for young footballers to showcase their talents while promoting unity and healthy competition.
Madam Aniagyei thanked sponsors, partners and stakeholders for their continued support, which has contributed to the success of the previous four editions of the tournament.
She congratulated past champions—Bankuman FC, Power FC, Rising Stars FC and BSB FC—before throwing the challenge to this year’s participants by asking, “Which team will become the first-ever winner of the Plan B FM GrassRoot Cup?”
She also announced that beyond the ultimate title, players and clubs will compete for individual honours including the Fair Play Award, Top Scorer, Best Player and Best Goalkeeper awards.
Highlighting the tournament’s talent development agenda, Madam Aniagyei announced Plan B FM’s official partnership with Kick Nation Sports Agency, a football scouting and management firm that will scout talents throughout the competition.
Drawing inspiration from Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho, she encouraged participants to seize the opportunity.
“Today’s grassroots footballer can become tomorrow’s global star. Ronaldinho rose from humble beginnings to conquer the world through football, and Ghana has produced greats such as Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and Mohammed Kudus. This tournament could be the beginning of another remarkable journey,” she said.
She also called on the Government to increase investment in grassroots football, stressing that successful football nations are built on strong grassroots structures.
“Strong football nations are built from strong grassroots foundations. Investing in grassroots football today will produce tomorrow’s champions,” she appealed.
Madam Aniagyei announced that the champions of the competition will receive GH¢12,000, the prestigious Mega Trophy, gold medals and a set of jerseys. The runners-up will earn GH¢6,000, silver medals and jerseys, while the third-placed team will receive GH¢4,000 and bronze medals.
She further assured participating teams that, with the support of sponsors, all 32 teams will receive consolation prizes.
Chief Executive Officer of Kick Nation Sports Agency, Wunnam Haruna, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to identifying and promoting talented footballers.
He announced that the tournament’s top scorer will earn an opportunity to join the Kick Nation Select Team, which is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom in November to participate in a tournament involving academy sides and showcase matches.
Former President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) and Executive Director of Accra Great Olympics, Mr. Kudjoe Fianoo, urged players to give their best performances and take advantage of the opportunity to attract interest from Ghana Premier League clubs preparing for the new season in the Tema Metropolis.
He commended Plan B FM for sustaining the tournament over the years and praised the attractive prize package. Mr. Fianoo also thanked sponsors and partners for their support, urging participating clubs to maintain discipline, reject violence and strictly observe the tournament’s rules. He further appealed to corporate Ghana to support grassroots football initiatives such as the Plan B FM GrassRoot Cup.
Representing the security agencies, the Tema Regional Police Command assured participants of adequate security throughout the tournament. The police representative urged teams, officials and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, respect the laws governing the competition and help maintain a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after matches.
The representative of the referees also appealed to players and team officials to exercise restraint whenever decisions go against them, reminding them that referees are human and capable of making mistakes. He, however, assured all participating teams of fair, professional and impartial officiating throughout the tournament.
The Plan B FM GrassRoot Cup 2026 will be held from August 22 to September 13, 2026, at the Mexico Astro Turf, Tema Community 2, with 32 teams competing in a knockout format under the theme “Today’s GrassRoot, Tomorrow’s Global Champion.”
The tournament is expected to serve not only as a platform for community football but also as a launchpad for young talents seeking professional opportunities both in Ghana and abroad.
