The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that authorities in Burkina Faso plan to commence controlled spillage from the Bagre Dam on Tuesday, August 11, if the reservoir’s water level reaches the trigger point of 234.00 metres.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 4, the Commission said the notice was based on an update received from SONABEL, the operators of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso.
According to the WRC, the reservoir water level at the dam stood at 232.93 metres as of Tuesday, August 4, with the dam currently 62.77 per cent full.
The Commission said the controlled spillage would only begin if the reservoir level reaches 234.00 metres.
“SONABEL plans to commence controlled water spillage from the Bagre Dam from Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir water level should reach 234.00 metres,” the statement said.
The WRC advised residents living along the White Volta River and adjoining communities to take the necessary precautions ahead of the possible spillage.
It urged residents to comply with safety directives issued by their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as other relevant state agencies.
“Communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas are advised to take the necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines from the local assemblies and the appropriate agencies,” the Commission stated.
The Water Resources Commission said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
