Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) has announced planned maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines, a move expected to cause temporary water supply interruptions and reduced water pressure in parts of Greater Accra and the Eastern Region.
The maintenance exercise, scheduled to take place from Thursday, August 6, to Saturday, August 8, 2026, will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema.
According to GWL, the works form part of its proactive infrastructure maintenance programme aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of water supply.
The company said engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections that require urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures and reduce water losses.
To facilitate the repairs, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down, while five sections of the transmission pipelines are isolated for replacement. Customers served by the Kpong Water Supply System should therefore expect temporary disruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.
Areas expected to be affected include Gbetsile, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, all communities within the Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie, as well as Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and surrounding communities.
Ghana Water has advised residents in the affected areas to store enough water ahead of the maintenance exercise and apologised for the inconvenience the temporary interruption may cause.
