The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to the growth of women’s football on the continent, with the winners of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to receive a record prize money of $2 million.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe announced the increase as part of the organisation’s continued efforts to reward excellence and provide greater support for women’s football development across Africa.
According to Dr Motsepe, the decision reflects CAF’s determination to place women’s football on a stronger financial footing and create more opportunities for female players, teams and stakeholders.
“The investment in women’s football is a priority for CAF. We want to ensure that our competitions continue to grow and that the players receive the recognition they deserve,” he said.
The $2 million prize for the 2026 WAFCON champions represents a significant boost compared to previous editions and underlines CAF’s ambition to make the tournament one of the most competitive women’s football competitions globally.
The move comes amid growing interest in African women’s football, following impressive performances by African teams at international competitions, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
CAF says it will continue to invest in infrastructure, grassroots development and competitions to accelerate the progress of women’s football across the continent.
