Political scientist Professor Ransford Gyampo has stressed that the exercise of free speech in a democratic society must be guided by responsibility and respect for peace.
According to him, nation-building and the democratic right to free speech allow citizens to express themselves freely, provided their comments do not undermine peace and social cohesion.
Prof. Gyampo noted that people can be brutally frank and offer harsh criticism without resorting to insults or abusive language. He argued that constructive criticism is essential in a democracy, but warned that free speech should not be misconstrued as a licence for buffoonery or foolish talk.
His comments underscore the need for responsible public discourse, particularly in a democratic environment where freedom of expression must be balanced with respect, civility, and the collective interest of national development.
