Government urged to declare state of emergency in fight against galamsey – Richard Anning

Richard Anning, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema Central Constituency, has called on the government to adopt tougher measures in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), arguing that granting amnesty to offenders would undermine efforts to protect Ghana’s environment.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Adomba De-Starboy, Mr. Anning questioned why individuals accused of engaging in illegal mining should be pardoned while others continue to face prosecution and imprisonment under Ghana’s laws.

He urged the government to declare a state of emergency to effectively address the galamsey menace, explaining that such a move would provide the President with the legal authority to implement stronger measures and mobilize all relevant state institutions to confront the crisis.

According to Mr. Anning, illegal mining operators are highly organized and strategic, often exploiting weaknesses within the system to continue their activities. He stressed that the fight against galamsey requires firm political will, uncompromising law enforcement, and decisive action rather than political compromises.

Mr. Anning also questioned the disappearance of several excavators and other mining equipment allegedly linked to illegal mining operations over the years. He called for a thorough investigation into the missing equipment, urging authorities to recover them where possible and hold all those found responsible accountable.

He maintained that protecting Ghana’s natural resources must remain a national priority and should be pursued without political interference.
