The National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) has suspended its Capacity Building Programme in its current structure with immediate effect, following concerns raised by National Service personnel over deductions associated with the initiative.
NASPA President, Abdul Wahab Bala Mohammed, announced the suspension in an update to members, stating that the decision was taken to allow for further review and restructuring of the programme.
The Capacity Building Programme was introduced as part of efforts to provide National Service personnel with additional skills and professional development opportunities during their service period. However, the initiative attracted criticism from some personnel after deductions were reportedly made from their monthly allowances to support the programme.
Some National Service personnel questioned the transparency, necessity, and approval process surrounding the deductions, with calls for clarity from NASPA and the National Service Authority (NSA).
The concerns intensified after reports that personnel had amounts deducted from their allowances without adequate consultation, prompting demands for accountability and a review of the arrangement.
In response, NASPA has now suspended the programme in its current form and indicated that further engagements will be held to address concerns and determine the way forward.
The Association is expected to provide additional details on the next steps after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The development comes amid broader discussions about the welfare and financial conditions of National Service personnel, including calls for improved support and transparency in programmes that affect their earnings.
