A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has expressed his sympathy to families affected by the recent flooding across parts of the country and called for urgent measures to address the recurring challenge.
His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration of Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the floods, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of the disaster and prevent future occurrences.
The two-day exercise, announced by the Presidency on Monday, July 6, will be conducted under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee with the theme: “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods.”
The initiative is aimed at mobilising citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment, and safeguard lives ahead of the expected heavy rains.
President Mahama has directed government appointees, including Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Chief Executive Officers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and heads of public institutions, to actively participate and lead cleanup activities in their respective areas.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem programme with Kofi Sekyi, James Tamakloe commended the President for introducing a dedicated national cleanup exercise but criticised attempts to blame the previous administration for the flooding situation.
According to him, the severity of the flooding challenge has now exposed the reality of the problem, adding that more practical solutions are needed beyond political accusations.
He called on the government to deploy the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) excavators and other equipment procured by the previous administration to desilt gutters, clear waterways, and improve drainage systems across the country.
Mr. Tamakloe accused the NDC of misleading the public by blaming the previous NPP government for flooding, insisting that the challenge continues under the current administration.
He also referenced the June 3, 2015 flood and fire disaster, which claimed several lives, noting that although a committee was established and recommendations were made, successive governments have failed to fully implement the findings.
Mr. Tamakloe, however, reiterated his support for the National General Cleaning Day initiative, describing it as a positive step towards promoting sanitation and reducing the risk of future flooding.
