‘Ghana on a sharp decline into chaos’ – Presby Moderator warns

‘Ghana on a sharp decline into chaos’ – Presby Moderator warns

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt Rev Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has warned against rising injustice, corruption, and moral decay in Ghana.

Speaking at the 44th Martyrs Day Remembrance Service organised by the Ghana Bar Association in collaboration with the Judicial Service on June 30, 2026, he described the nation as being on a “sharp decline into chaos”.

Rt Rev Dr Nana Opare Kwakye cautioned that remembrance services for fallen national heroes lose their meaning if they are not matched with justice and integrity in public life.

“If we will hold the remembrance services and go back to life as usual, then like the people described in the books of Isaiah and Matthew, we are also hypocrites,” he said.

According to him, public worship and national commemorations become empty rituals if citizens continue to tolerate injustice and corruption.

“We honour God with our lips and yet our hearts are far from Him, so we cannot continue to hold the remembrance services,” he stressed.

The church leader expressed concern about growing political interference in the justice system, warning that court decisions must not be influenced by partisan interests.

“If judgments that are served in our courts are coloured with partisan politics because some politicians want us to do so for them, we cannot continue,” he stated.

He also condemned corruption and exploitation in society, especially against vulnerable groups such as widows and orphans.

What Presby Moderator said about Dr. Bawumia

“We cannot continue to hold remembrance services for these wonderful men and women when we serve justice to the highest bidder in our nation,” he emphasised.

Martyrs Day is observed annually to honour three High Court Justices (Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong) and a retired army officer (Major Sam Acquah) who were brutally abducted and murdered during a nighttime curfew on June 30, 1982.
