Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately deploy emergency response teams to flood-affected communities following Monday’s heavy rains across the region.

In a statement issued on June 29, the Minister expressed sympathy to residents who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships as a result of the flooding, assuring them that the government stands with them during the difficult period.

She instructed all MMDCEs to work alongside officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), emergency response teams and technical officers to intensify rescue operations, evacuate trapped residents where necessary, assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate relief to affected communities.

“The safety and well-being of every resident remain my highest priority,” the Minister stated, adding that all MMDCEs are expected to remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is also collaborating with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency response agencies to coordinate rescue efforts and protect lives and property.

With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting more rainfall, the Minister urged residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing floodwaters. She also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure children remain indoors and do not attempt to play in or cross floodwaters.

Residents requiring emergency assistance have been advised to contact NADMO through its emergency lines or WhatsApp platform for immediate support.

Hon. Linda Ocloo reaffirmed the Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to supporting affected communities, saying the government would continue working tirelessly with local assemblies and emergency agencies to safeguard lives and assist victims of the floods.
