A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has dismissed calls by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and government officials for the NPP to persuade former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana, describing them as a diversion from the country’s current economic challenges.
His comments follow calls by anti-corruption campaigner and Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu, urging the NPP and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to encourage Mr. Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana to answer questions regarding his tenure as Finance Minister.
According to Mr. Senanu, such a move would help restore public confidence and demonstrate accountability, particularly considering the significant role Mr. Ofori-Atta played in managing the country’s finances.
Reacting on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Tamakloe argued that the repeated calls for the former Finance Minister’s return were politically motivated and intended to shift public attention away from the government’s handling of the economy.
He challenged the government to present any evidence it has against Mr. Ofori-Atta and proceed with the legal process.
Mr. Tamakloe maintained that if prosecutors have sufficient evidence, they can pursue the matter through the courts, noting that trials in absentia are recognised under certain legal frameworks and are practised in some jurisdictions.
He insisted that the continuous pressure on the former Finance Minister to return to Ghana is a “non-starter” and urged the government to focus on addressing the country’s pressing economic concerns rather than engaging in political rhetoric.
