Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has reportedly resigned from Ghana’s Council of State, according to sources cited by Plan B news.
While the exact reasons for her departure have not been officially disclosed, reports suggest that Justice Akuffo ceased attending meetings of the Council following developments surrounding the removal process involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Sources further indicate that she submitted her resignation towards the end of 2025.
Justice Akuffo, who served as Ghana’s Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020, was a member of the Council of State, the constitutional body mandated to advise the President on matters of governance and national policy.
Her reported resignation has drawn attention due to her position during deliberations on the petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. In April 2025, the Council voted on whether a prima facie case had been established against Justice Torkornoo, with 30 of the 31 members voting in favour.
Sophia Akuffo was the sole member who abstained from the vote and did not publicly provide reasons for her decision.
Neither the Council of State nor the Office of the President has officially confirmed her resignation.
If confirmed, her departure would mark a significant development within one of the country’s most important constitutional advisory bodies.
