Flooding often caused by human activities and poor drainage planning — Ebenezer Yenzu

Flooding often caused by human activities and poor drainage planning — Ebenezer Yenzu
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mr. Ebenezer Yenzu, a National Fire Service officer, has attributed many flooding incidents in urban areas to human activities that obstruct the natural flow of rainwater.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Mr. Yenzu explained that flooding occurs in different forms, including flash floods and urban floods.
According to him, flash floods occur when a significant amount of rainfall is received within a short period, causing water levels to rise rapidly. He noted that such floods are usually short-lived, as the water quickly flows through natural waterways and drainage channels. He therefore stressed the importance of keeping these channels clear to allow water to pass through safely.
Mr. Yenzu further explained that urban flooding is largely the result of human activities. He noted that buildings and other structures are often erected on waterways and drainage paths, obstructing the natural movement of rainwater and increasing the risk of flooding in nearby communities.
He added that floodwaters tend to remain stagnant for extended periods when drainage routes are blocked by buildings, debris, or other obstructions, preventing water from flowing away naturally.
Mr. Yenzu called for proper planning and adherence to drainage regulations to help reduce the incidence of flooding and its impact on communities.
