Health Minister suspends KATH CEO for two weeks over emergency admissions Directive

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer for two weeks with immediate effect.

According to a letter dated June 5, 2026, the suspension follows the CEO’s announcement of a temporary halt to emergency admissions at the hospital on June 3, 2026.

The Minister stated that the CEO admitted during a meeting on June 4 that he had acted contrary to the directives of President John Dramani Mahama by making the announcement.

Mr. Akandoh also cited comments made by the Head of Public Affairs of KATH during an interview on Channel One Newsroom regarding the suspension of new emergency admissions, describing them as being at variance with the President’s directives.

The Health Minister has requested the Board to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the decision, including the authority under which the statements were made and whether management approved the media interview.

The Board has further been asked to determine any appropriate sanctions and submit a report to the Minister within two weeks.

The suspension takes immediate effect, and the CEO is expected to report back to the Minister after the two-week period.
