Ga South MCE leads demolition of wall blocking waterway amid flooding concerns

Parts Of Accra Floods Again After Several Hours Of Heavy Downpour

Residents in parts of the Ga SouthMunicipality witnessed a dramatic scene after the Municipal Chief Executive and officials of the Assembly moved in to pull down a wall allegedly constructed across a major waterway, a structure many residents believe contributed heavily to recent flooding in the area.

The operation, which drew large crowds and intense public attention, followed growing complaints from frustrated residents who accused some developers of blocking natural drainage paths with unauthorized structures. For weeks, overflowing drains and stagnant floodwaters had turned several roads into muddy streams, disrupting movement and threatening homes and businesses.

Eyewitnesses said the Assembly officials arrived with determination as excavators and workers began dismantling portions of the wall believed to be obstructing the free flow of water. Curious residents gathered around the scene, some applauding the action while others expressed anger over what they described as reckless construction practices that endangered entire communities.

According to residents, the blocked waterway had become a major concern whenever heavy rains hit the municipality. Floodwaters reportedly spilled into homes, destroyed personal belongings, and created fear among families living close to the affected area. Many claimed repeated warnings had been ignored until the flooding situation worsened.

The Municipal Chief Executive reportedly supervised the exercise personally as officials monitored the movement of water once the obstruction was removed. Moments after parts of the wall came down, water trapped within the area began flowing steadily through the channel, bringing visible relief to residents who had struggled with the flooding situation.

Some community members praised the Assembly for taking swift action, insisting authorities must continue identifying and demolishing structures that interfere with waterways and drainage systems. Others called for stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent future disasters, especially during the rainy season.

The incident has once again thrown national attention on the growing problem of indiscriminate construction and poor drainage management in urban communities. As flood risks continue to rise during heavy rains, many residents now hope the dramatic demolition will serve as a warning to developers who ignore environmental and safety regulations in pursuit of unchecked construction.
