The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested 34 suspects in connection with a deadly shooting incident linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute at Funsi in the Wa East District.
According to a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service Public Affairs Unit on May 24, 2026, the incident resulted in the deaths of three young men.
Police said the Funsi Police received information on the night of May 22 that two persons had been shot and killed at the Gbelonosi section of the community. Officers who rushed to the scene confirmed the deaths of 37-year-old Fufulu Nandugu and 22-year-old Yussif Samahan.
The statement added that during subsequent police operations and investigations, a third victim identified as 20-year-old Amadu Lukman was also found dead in the community.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, together with a reinforcement team, later visited the affected area to support ongoing investigations and help maintain law and order.
Police disclosed that one shotgun, bows and arrows, gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks, and a medallion believed to be linked to the chieftaincy tensions were retrieved during the operation.
All suspects and exhibits have since been conveyed to Wa to assist with further investigations.
The Police Administration expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that all persons responsible for the disturbance would be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, intensified police patrols and other security measures have been deployed in the community to maintain peace and security.
