An aspiring Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Reagan Amponsah Asare, has been arrested alongside several accomplices for allegedly impersonating national security operatives and extorting money from illegal mining operators.

According to reports, the suspects are accused of posing as national security personnel and moving from one galamsey site to another across parts of the Western North Region. Their alleged scheme involved intimidating illegal miners and demanding money under the pretext of enforcing security directives.

Sources indicate that the group operated by presenting themselves as officials on special assignments, using their assumed authority to extract cash from operators who feared arrest or shutdown of their activities.

Reagan Amponsah Asare and his accomplices were subsequently arraigned before the Bodi Circuit Court. The court remanded them into police custody to allow for further investigations into the matter.

Authorities are expected to pursue charges including impersonation, extortion, and other offences linked to illegal mining activities.

A video from the arrest, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the suspects in handcuffs. Reagan Amponsah Asare appeared visibly distressed in the footage, breaking down in tears as security personnel escorted them away. The video has triggered mixed reactions online, with some expressing shock while others have called for swift justice.

The incident has reignited national concerns over illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, and the increasing trend of individuals exploiting the situation through fraudulent activities.

Many members of the public have urged law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to clamp down on both illegal mining operations and the impersonation of state security officials.
