Eat well to avoid iron deficiency anaemia – Microbiologist warns

Eat well to avoid iron deficiency anaemia – Microbiologist warns
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mr Paul Kwame Owusu, a microbiologist, has explained in detail how the lack of iron in daily meals causes the human body to lose red blood cells.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Drive Time show, Mr Owusu said that blood levels in the human body vary according to gender, age, and condition from infants to pregnant women but noted that the normal minimum range is between 11hb and 13hb.

He further explained that iron deficiency, high blood pressure (BP), and type two diabetes often share similar symptoms and, if left untreated, can damage vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and lungs.

Mr Owusu advised the public to avoid self-medication until a medical diagnosis has been confirmed. He urged people to be alert to symptoms including general body weakness, dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, changes in hair colour and thickness, and hair loss.

He encouraged the consumption of iron-rich foods such as kontomire, beans, fish, chicken, groundnuts, and red meat to boost red blood cell production, stressing that iron is essential for the production of red blood cells, which are vital to the human body.

He concluded by urging the public to pay closer attention to their diet to prevent iron deficiency anaemia.
