The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is facing backlash after arresting private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu for allegedly obstructing an officer.
Mr. Kpebu was detained following a confrontation with a military officer at the OSP premises, where he had been invited to assist with investigations related to corruption allegations he made against the institution.
It is on this note that leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has condemned the OSP’s actions, stating that the office is fighting freedom of expression instead of corruption.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor has the mandate for fighting corruption but he (Kissi Agyebeng) chooses to fight creed of expression instead”, he noted.
Mr. Mornah believes the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng should not act as a complainant, investigator, and judge in cases involving its own integrity, and instead, an independent body like the Ghana Police Service should handle such matters.
Speaking during a panel discussion on GBC’s ‘Focus’ show on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Bernard Mornah even joked that speaking out on the matter could make him a possible target for the OSP.
Prominent figures, including Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Speaker Alban Bagbin, have called for the OSP’s abolition, citing its ineffectiveness and perceived overreach.
Deputy Director for Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal-Deen Abdulai speaking on the show however, was of the view that the office should not be scraped entirely but the law must be amended instead.
