The National Inter‑Agency Task Force on Illegal Mining (NAIMOS) has apprehended two Chinese nationals allegedly involved in illegal mining activities along the Subri River. This action forms part of the government’s intensified efforts to curb the destructive “galamsey” operations that continue to threaten Ghana’s rivers and natural environment.

According to NAIMOS officials, the two suspects were caught after investigations revealed their involvement in unlicensed mining activities. These operations, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” are known for causing severe environmental damage, including water pollution, riverbed destruction, and deforestation. The Subri River, which is crucial for local communities’ water supply and livelihoods, has been particularly affected by the ongoing illegal mining activities.

The arrests highlight the increasing role of foreign nationals in illicit mining operations, a trend that has prompted the government and regulatory agencies to step up monitoring and enforcement. NAIMOS emphasized that illegal mining, regardless of who is involved, will not be tolerated. “This serves as a strong warning to both local and foreign operators who may consider engaging in unlicensed mining,” a spokesperson said.

Illegal mining in Ghana has long been a challenge, especially in regions with rich mineral deposits. While it provides employment opportunities for some, it often results in devastating environmental consequences. Contaminated rivers, destroyed farmland, and loss of biodiversity are among the most pressing issues caused by galamsey operations. By targeting foreign nationals involved in these activities, NAIMOS aims to reinforce the rule of law and protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.

The arrest also signals a collaborative approach by the government, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal mining more effectively. NAIMOS continues to coordinate surveillance, field operations, and intelligence gathering to identify hotspots and dismantle illicit mining networks. These proactive measures are essential in safeguarding both the environment and the livelihoods of communities that depend on rivers like Subri for drinking water, fishing, and farming.

While investigations are ongoing, the detained individuals are expected to face legal proceedings under Ghana’s environmental and mining regulations. NAIMOS has reiterated that the fight against illegal mining is far from over and that all offenders will be held accountable, emphasizing that protecting Ghana’s rivers and natural resources is a top national priority.

This development serves as a reminder that illegal mining not only undermines environmental sustainability but also affects public health and the economy. The Ghanaian government remains committed to ensuring that mining activities are conducted legally, responsibly, and in a way that supports long-term national development.
